Dragons Den star defends lifestyle businesses
Ex-Dragon's Den entrepreneur Doug Richard has recently come out to defend 'lifestyle' businesses and the mindset that treats them, many of them business insurance customers, as second class organisations.
Writing on the website of his entrepreneurial business training company, School for Startups, he explained his anger at hearing these businesses rubbished recently. The criticism was all the more damning as the (unnamed) critic is heavily involved in the small business community, in a position of some responsibility.
Doug railed at the idea that a business wasn't regarded as a 'proper' business unless it had assets like premises, payroll and externally funded debt. The increasing provision of services of all kinds to startups in bite-sized chunks means that it is completely possible to start and run a company by engaging outside contractors to do the required specialist work. Vital support services such as accounting, book-keeping and business insurance are all available too.
This shouldn't mean that these businesses are viewed any differently to a more traditionally run business.
