Business threat from an unlikely source

You never know where a threat to your business will come from, and that's why insurance for business provides safety nets.

On the 18th June 2010 an HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) debt collection officer was jailed for two and a half years for stealing nearly £85,000 from taxpayers.

Geoffrey Eley, 44, from Redditch, pocketed cash payments against tax debts between 2001 and 2007. He tried to cover his tracks by depositing cheques from other debtors against the accounts of those he had stolen from.

Joff Parsons, Head of HMRC's Internal Governance Criminal Investigations, said:

"HMRC expects the highest standards of behaviour from its staff. Eley abused his position of trust for personal gain. We will relentlessly pursue anyone who attempts to steal from public funds and they will face criminal sanctions."

It's an unusual case but next time you are shopping around for a business insurance quote it's worth checking to see what eventualities are covered.
