Business Insurance News Review of the Year 2010

Much of the news we brought to business insurance customers during 2010 featured the state of the economy and the effects of the election, both before and after the event.

But that does all sound a bit hum-drum so this week we've decided to deliver a round-up of the year's top five best stories, in reverse order.

5. Jaguar and Land Rover to stay put Good news reached workers and businesses in the Midlands when the new owners of Jaguar Land Rover, Indian giant Tata Motors, reversed a decision to close one of the two plants they had inherited in the area.

4. Bodyguards "R" Us? Business insurance policyholders were warned in September that in these uncertain times they should consider personal protection (bodyguards). But it turned out that the warning, in a blog post on a website for executives, came from the head of a commercial security firm!

3. World Cup woe In February we highlighted the boost that business insurance customers could expect if England could land the World Cup for 2018. As we now know the bid failed and businesses will have to look to their own resources.

2. Manufacturing to make a comeback in the UK? Rather surprising news came out in December that the Conservative-led coalition would be trying to grow 'advanced' manufacturing. This would reverse the work of the Thatcher government, which had a policy of abandoning manufacturing as a sector.

1. Hot weather causes business problems Finally and ironically, as the second bout of snow in December recedes at last, we bought business insurance customers the news that hot weather could be bad for business too. As well as absenteeism, O2's mobile network failed when the air conditioning at a data centre finally gave up the ghost.

We will continue to bring business news to you throughout the New Year and wish our business insurance customers all the best for 2011.
